In an age when print is said to be waning, the media for autobiography are multiplying. Contemporary autobiographies come in forms as diverse as their authors, from zines and comics to films and photography. In this lecture, Hillary Chute will discuss how authors use mixed media to explore and construct the self. She will trace the emergence and rise of nontraditional autobiographies in both popular culture and the academy.
Hillary Chute is associate professor in English and one of the nation’s leading experts on comics. In 2006 she coedited the “Graphic Narrative” special issue of MFS: Modern Fiction Studies, the first issue of an academic journal in literature devoted to exploring comics. She is the author of Graphic Women: Life Narrative and Contemporary Comics and Outside the Box: Interviews with Contemporary Cartoonists; the associate editor of Art Spiegelman’s MetaMaus; and a contributor to a number of periodicals. Her current book project is titled “Disaster Is My Muse”: Visual Witnessing, Comics, and Documentary Form. In 2014 she coedited the special issue of Critical Inquiry on comics and media.
To learn more, read an article about the 2012 Comics: Philosophy & Practice conference, Chute’s piece in Poetry magazine, “Secret Labor: Sketching the Connection between Poetry and Comics,” and the rebuttal from the Atlantic.
Purchase Chute's recent book, Outside the Box: Interviews with Contemporary Cartoonists. Chute's other works include MetaMaus, for which she was an associate editor, and Graphic Women: Life Narrative and Contemporary Comics. Copies of Outside the Box will be available for purchase at the lecture.
